Thanks for relaying this, David. I often find Lefsetz very over the top too, but he often has a good point somewhere along the line ;)

Funnily enough, I wrote a piece on albums last year, you may like to read it here http://uk.music-jobs.com/blog/index.php/music-industry-news/back-to-the-future-lp/

I have read alot of blogs on the state of the music business, been in the business a very long time. We're back to the future for sure. The single song is king has always been. Staying ahead of the game is making good single. Indies will bring the machine down. Don't forget the Juke Box scared many record companies years ago.
The computer is the progamable juke box the little guy always wanted.

Yessiree! That's what I see-a focus back on the single song. To look to the future we also look back to when the industry was focused on hit songs- one song at a time. Get it done and release it. Chess, Sun, and Atlantic weren't laboring away at releasing albums, it was about finding the trend or making the trend and getting it out next week, when it was most relevant to the consumer...not sometime next year. Music was truly fresh and current. This will be the way again in the future of music, so focus on that one killer song and get it out there ASAP before the record companies figure it out and try and find a way to put themselves between you and the money...again.

Dave,

Check out my thoughts on the end of the music album as the organizing principle. Record labels are not required in the future, you must know that..at least not as they stand today. So "advances" which really mean "sign away your copyrights" will be a thing of the past.
